This article will go over what supplemental information is and where to add it to the claim form in DentalWriter Plus+
There are some medical codes that need additional information on the claim form. Some codes like 41899 - Unspecified Procedure Dentoalveolar Structures, when used for Extractions will need the tooth or teeth numbers added to the supplemental information area. The supplemental information gives the medical insurance company just a little more information about that procedure code and why you are using it.
There are two ways to add the supplemental information on to the claim form inside of DentalWriter Plus+, you can set the supplemental information as a default for specific codes or you can add it directly to the claim form.
To add the supplemental information as a default to specific codes you will want to navigate to the Admin area on the left menu panel. Once inside of Admin navigate to CPT/HCPCS Codes (Edit Fees).
Now you can choose the code you want to add the supplemental information to by choosing from the Common Code list or searching the code. Once you find the code, click on it to open the edit box. You will see toward the bottom of the box is the Supplemental Information box, this is where you will add the information you want defaulted in for that specific code. Once added hit the Save button.
Now every time you choose that specific code to be pulled onto the claim it will automatically add the supplemental information to the claim form in the correct area.
To add the supplemental information directly on the claim form you will first need to generate a claim in DentalWriter Plus+
Once the claim is open, locate Box 24. That is the box where the CPT codes will be listed and where you will add in the supplemental information. To add the supplemental information you will need to edit the CPT code line item. To do that you can either click on the specific line item or click the pencil icon to edit.
Once you click the edit button or click on the line, the Procedure and Service box will open up. When this box opens up you will scroll down to the bottom of the page and that is where you will find the Supplemental Information box.
This example is for extractions using the CPT code 41899. In the Supplemental Information area I have added the Qualifier JP and then the teeth numbers that are being extracted. The JP qualifier means that you are going to list the teeth numbers now.
Hit the save button and your claim will now have the Supplemental Information listed in the red shaded area above the CPT code and should look like this:
You are able to customize the supplemental information drop down list from the Procedure and Services edit box. When you scroll down to the supplemental information you will click the symbol that looks like a piece of paper to the right of the supplemental information box. The box that pops open is where you can add in the items you would like in the drop down list. To add an item click the "+ New Item" in the upper left corner, now you can add in your first item. You will do that for each item you want listed and then click the Save button when you are done.
When you are fully done adding in items click the Save button in the Procedure and Services box and you are all set.
